www.oikon.hrOverview
OIKON Ltd. - Institute of Applied Ecology is a Croatian environmental consultancy and research organisation with 27 years of experience, 70+ employees, and over 1,800 completed contracts. The company specialises in environmental protection, sustainable natural resource management, and preservation of natural and cultural heritage, drawing on an interdisciplinary team that includes 21 professions spanning geodesy, ecology, forestry, biology, geoinformatics, geography, agronomy and other. Croatia is currently a PECS (Plan for European Cooperating States) member, and OIKON is one of the country's most active organisations in ESA-funded downstream activities. The company combines ecological domain expertise with strong geospatial and EO capability to deliver operational services for national and international users, covering land use and land cover mapping, forest ecosystem assessment, coastal and marine ecosystem monitoring, invasive species detection, and habitat assessment.
Core Competencies
Terrestrial: forest ecosystem assessment, invasive species detection, habitat suitability analysis, land use and land cover mapping Coastal and Marine: coastal ecosystem monitoring, infralittoral habitat mapping, marine water quality monitoring Cross-cutting: Earth observation applications, GIS and spatial analysis, environmental modelling, satellite image processing
Space Experience
OIKON brings extensive downstream Earth observation experience from county-level pilot services to national mapping programmes with a portfolio that spans both institutional and ESA-funded projects. The company has expertise in satellite image processing, multi-temporal land cover classification, and automated change detection using both Copernicus data and very high-resolution commercial imagery. In terrestrial applications, OIKON has delivered national-scale land cover mapping within the CORINE framework, automated classification of agricultural parcels, machine learning-driven detection of invasive alien species at regional scale using multi-sensor optical data, and EO-based forest pests and diseases monitoring. In the marine domain, the company has completed national seafloor habitat type mapping using Sentinel optical data and developed EO-based water parameters monitoring. In coastal applications, OIKON has built a monitoring system focused on land cover change detection driven by human activity. In wildlife conservation, the company builds habitat suitability and connectivity models for protected species including large carnivores, combining EO-derived land cover products with ecological modelling.
Collaboration Needs
OIKON is looking for partners to jointly pursue project opportunities through ESA, EU, and institutional funding programmes, as well as partnerships that enable scaling of existing EO services into new geographic markets. The company is also open to co-development of new operational EO products where complementary expertise can be combined.
